 Producing wealth and cooperating to Brazil’s economic growth. Unigel strives and invests to have this process with respectful of people and environment. It undertakes efforts to protect the fauna, the flora and the quality of life of the communities where it is engaged and receives full support from its employees.
In the cities surrounding its industrial units, Unigel invests in projects addressing vocational education and also education focused on preservation of the environment and natural resources.
Here are some examples:
- Z- 54 Fishing Colony
In 2002, Proquigel funded the project of a new fishing colony in Rio da Cunha – small fisherman village in the district of Passé (BA) –, in partnership with the Municipality of Candeias, that provided the land. This initiative confirms the socioeconomic nature of the undertaking, with special emphasis on legislation about environmental protection and fishing control, benefiting over 100 families of fishermen and shellfish gatherers of this small community in front of the Maré Island.
- Gysella Tygel Children’s Educational Center
In April 2004, the Gysella Tygel Children’s Educational Center was inaugurated in the district of Caroba, municipality of Candeias (BA).
Within a surface area of 2,000 sq m, with 450 sq m of built area, the Center serves nearly 250 3-5 year old children, each year. In addition to the day nursery and preschool, educational activities are conducted, such as lectures, awareness campaigns for parents (mouth hygiene, gynecology, general clinics) voluntary efforts from campaigns’ collaborators, such as basic food basket distribution, and the campaigns “Adopt a Smile”, “Shoe a Child” and “Children’s Day”. The Center is administered by a co-management system between Proquigel and Candeias’ Municipal Education Secretariat.
- Jaguará Acrylic Project
In 2002, Proquigel created an art workshop in the district of Jaguará, municipality of Feira de Santana (BA), for recycling waste matter from the acrylic production facility. Named as Jaguará, the project has already professionally developed nearly 80 teenagers and today serves 30 youngsters that produce trophies, and other ornamental pieces of craftsmanship and domestic utility. In addition to Unigel, that contributes by donating the material, this initiative is also sponsored by the National Institute of Acrylic development, by Feira de Santana’s Municipal Education Secretariat, and by the State National Industrial Education Service (SENAI) in addition to being supervised by Jaguará’s Community Council.
